Company Support Officers

The role of the CSO’s will be to visit companies in the Battalion to show support and interest, and to identify whether or not the company have any specific needs that the CSO’s can help with.

Specifically their role will be to:
  • Listen to company staff in order to be clear about the support needed
  • Support existing BB companies to bring about improvements in their youth and children’s work using the Company
  • Development Scheme as a basis for development.
  • Promote best practice in BB companies/quality standards relating to:
  • working with children and young people
  • Safety including child protection
  • Programme development
  • Participation of children and young people
  • To encourage companies to set appropriate targets relating to:
  • Staff development and training
  • Staffing
  • Resources
  • Increases in membership
Their role is not about:
  • Coming in and taking over;
  • Conducting inspections and audits;
  • Being another staff resource on a Company night.

To be able to carry out their role the CSO will need to have the following attributes:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of youth work standards and best practice
  • Knowledge of current Brigade and Battalion initiatives including leader training, CDS, programme/events etc
  • Knowledge of Brigade policies on safety, child protection and equal opportunities
  • Knowledge of the participation of young people at all levels of the organisation

Skills:

  • Current youth work skills
  • Listening skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Good communication skills

Attitudes:

  • Commitment to equal opportunities in the Brigade
  • Commitment to the participation of young people in the BB
