An Example of how to Gain a Discover Award

About Discover

Gaining the Awards

Wearing the Awards

The 2 examples below show 2 different ways in which it is possible to gain a Discover Badge.

Remember 1 hours activity equals 1 point.

Example 1

How a young person achieved a Community Badge by doing 7 hours of activity. In other words gained 7 points.

In this example the young person completed 1 hour of activity in 2 different Topics from each Sub-Zone as well as a Christain Faith topic.

Topics Done Sector Sub-Zone
Road Safey Safety Local & National
My Town Local Community Local & National
BB Worldwide Global International
Street Children International Development International
Weather Nature Nature & Environment
Recycling Conservation Nature & Environment

The young person also did 1 hours activity on a Christian Faith topic;
My Church in the Community Local Community Local & National

This means the young person counted 3 points from the Local & National Sub-Zone, 2 points from the International Sub-Zone, and 2 from Nature & Environment to make the 7 needed.

Example 2

How one young person got the 7 points to get a Skills Badge.

Topics Done
Hours of Activity
Sector Sub-Zone
Snare Drum
4
Band Interests
First Aid
1
Emmergency Aid Life Skills
Web Design
1
Media Creativity

The young person also did 1 hours activity on a Christian Faith topic;
Stained Glass Window
1
Craft Creativity

This time the young person has counted 4 points from only 1 Topic because they play a snare drum in the Companies band. The other 3 points were made up by doing 1 hour of activity from the Life Skills and Creativity Sub-Zones, as well as a Christian Faith Topic.

The 4 hours of activity from 1 Topic is the maximum that can be counted towards an award. To get the award the young person needed to do 1 hour of activity in topics from the other 2 Sub-Zones and a Christian Faith topic.

There are many other ways of combining activities to make the points needed to get an award. Some can be quite complex, but your Company Officer should be able to tell you how you are going. But, however you do it the 3 conditions below need to be followed:

  • There must be at least 1 point from each Sub-Zone;
  • At least 1 point should come from a Christian Faith Topic;
  • You can only count a maximum of 4 points from any Topic in a Sub-Zone.

Remember the Topics are those in the blue circle on the Discover Wheel. This applies to all 3 awards.
